My first spawn is 1/4 in. How long do you need to leave a top on the tank so their lungs will develop?

These things are slow growers.

If you have cold dry air then you need to leave the top on, otherwise it's summer so it should be fine to take it off whenever. They should be full grown by 6-7 months. I think they grow rather quickly...maybe not as quick as guppies but pretty fast. Lots of food is key and don't overcrowed.

I always had better luck with any of the anabantoids (gouramis, bettas) when I left a cover on them. Never had them ouitside though, always inside where typically the air is dry and 70-ish degrees.
