Frustration with discus:
I have 2 pairs that are breeding, one pair has not done anything for 45 days. I needed the space so I put them in a 90 gal community tank --- you know the story-- 20 days later they spawn. A massive spawn.
If I leave them in the community tank I will not get one fry. If I pull them along with the eggs they will probably eat the eggs but they may spawn again. There are too many fish in the tank to pull all of the other fish out of the 90 and leave the pair.
I guess I will pull the pair along with the eggs tonight and hope that they will not eat them

Re: Frustration with discus:
Most things I've read say the babies must feed off their parents slime coast for the first few days after becoming free swimming. After a few days BBS can be fed but I think removing the eggs would not be successful.
Re: Frustration with discus:
They have to eat off of the parents slime coat.

Re: Frustration with discus:
well, I took all of the angels out and the other discus. I put a second pair that have laid eggs in the past but do not seem to be active and I left for vacation. I came back a hour or so ago and the tank heater was no longer working. I replace the heater and went and got a divider for the two pairs in the tank.
When I arrived at home both pair now have fry. I will try it again and maybe I can get it right. I hope to see them attached to the parents tomorrow.

Both sets of fry are starting to go free swimming. Both sets are also starting to attach to the parents.
I have BBS going and micro worms that I gave them around 3. Maybe I will get a good batch from these.
I will try to start feeding them about 4 or 5 x a day starting Monday.

Re: Frustration with discus:
The fry are 1/2 dime size now and are still eating off of the backs of their parents. They were a little slow to eat bbs but they started eating bbs yesterday. I was starting to get worried. They seem to like the bbs because they are going to town on it. No deaths at this point. I will give them at least another week and then I will pull the fry. I think they should spawn again a week or two after I pull the fry. I have a lot of fry but they move around too much to count.

Re: Frustration with discus:
I separated the fry from their parents this morning. My guess is that I have 100 plus fry. I have not lost any fry as of today. With the fry in a smaller tank water changes should be much easier. It is my hope that the parents will lay again in a couple of weeks.

I have too many to keep. I will sell some in the future but I want them to get to 1/2 dollar size. When I sell some I will give any club member a good price.
